What is Tai-Chi?
Taichi is a martial art. It originated in China more than thousand years ago. It was originally used for self defense. But today most people practice it for health benefits and Spiritual development. Taichi is for attaining inner peace, joy and Taichi looks like a slow dance. But with its simple movements, Taichi is a wealth of philosophy, medicine and science.
The continuous gentle movements of Taichi are based on the principle that running water never stagnates. The gentle movements relax your muscles and joints. They strengthen your body physically, mentally and spiritually. It helps in the unity of the body, mind and the spirit.
Taichi is like water in a pot. We do not see the hidden power in it before heating. But when it is heated, we could see the enormous power of steam. It could move trains.
A Taichi master is compared to an iron ball inside a cotton wrap. The more one practices Taichi, the more he gets inner strength.
Origin of Tai-Chi
Taichi was founded by Chang San Feng during the 13th century. He was an eminent acupuncturist. He combined this knowledge with Taichi system. He himself organized Taichi into 12 forms called Chi Disruption forms. According to legends, it is said that he lived more than hundred years. He did not die but transformed into pure spirit and flew away. (Spiritual Attainments)
Taichi is practiced at many levels. Grand Master Yang Cheng Fu, the third generation of the yang family, had made 85 movements in Taichi. Apart from this, there are sword techniques, knife techniques and other techniques of the hand.
All these techniques are based on the movements of animals and birds such as cat, eagle, crane etc.
When it is applied as a martial art, a Taichi master simply in an attack has the capacity to damage the internal organs of the enemy without causing any sign of outward injury.
